Across the semester, year 9 students will explore cafe menu development, as they continue to develop a range of technical skills in Food Technology. Students will continue to extend their knowledge, working with a variety of ingredients, tools and equipment. Students will have the opportunity to investigate and make judgements on how the principles of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation and sensory perceptions influence the creation of food solutions.
Students will investigate the development of modern cafe menus while considering the global context of ‘Personal and Cultural Expression’. Students will be guided by the statement of inquiry: The appreciation of aesthetics communicates the perspectives of consumers through the form products take. During this inquiry, students will inquire and analyse how the development of modern cafe menus within the hospitality industry are influenced by consumer perspectives. Students will progress in a range of cooking techniques applied in the skilful production of cafe menu items. The unit will provide students with the opportunity to actively engage in the MYP Design Cycle, as they investigate a range of brunch dishes and work towards generating and producing their own cafe menu-inspired design ideas. During the unit, students will combine knowledge, understanding and skills to create a range of products, including their final design solutions.
